Parents, can we all just collectively take a moment to breathe? One. Two. Three. Ahhh!

The holiday season was a magical, eventful, exciting, albeit exhausting time for all of us. Whether we found ourselves playing Santa and spreading the joy of the holiday season or hosting large family gatherings for family near and far, it was a time that filled our hearts while pushing us to hope for a more relaxing new year.

The good thing about celebrating the holidays as parents is that we can feel both thrilled and tired. Happy and yearning. Enamored and energy-seeking. It’s the balance we often juggle with growing families in tow, and, most importantly, we’re here to remind you that it’s normal and natural.

Life is about balance, and parenting is too.

Now that we’ve reached a new year, we can take a breather from holiday planning and, hopefully, find some time for rest and relaxation for all of us.

With smart budgeting and a can-do attitude, some of America's most beloved vacation spots can be within reach - no matter what size your family (or wallet) may be! So join us on this journey towards creating unforgettable memories without breaking the bank.

Vacations Don’t Have to Equal Physical and Financial Exhaustion

Are you trying to step away from the chaos and gray skies of winter? You’re not alone!

We’ll be the first to admit that winters are beautiful but long. The colder weather often keeps us in tighter quarters with less time spent enjoying the great outdoors. As self-proclaimed adventure chasers, this can really feel quite lame… if we’re being honest.

Here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait until summer to indulge in that must-visit vacation spot.

Peel yourself from cozy winter hibernation and enjoy all the world has to offer this time of year.

Whether getting a break from the everyday grind or escaping for some family fun time, we want to help parents searching for that next relaxing adventure to get in that much-needed post-holiday restoration, especially when the winter blues hit.

Fret no more!  Your next adventure is right around the corner.

Explore some of our favorite ideas for winter getaways. We hope you’ll take some time to enjoy a winter adventure with your family.

Surfs (or Naps!) up at the beach

There’s a reason why ocean waves and whale songs are included on sleep machines– they’re calm and peaceful and provide the best backdrop to some epic naps. Trust us.

If we had to sum up how we feel about the sun, waves, and sand, we’d say: there’s nothing like a day at the beach to relax and rejuvenate– any time of year.

The best part? It doesn’t have to cost a lot.

You only need a few beach towels, sunscreen, and a cooler full of your favorite food and drinks.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, try visiting a state or national park instead of a resort town. And remember, the ocean doesn’t have to equal a beach day. Instead, you can enjoy a nice day on the water near a local lake, pond, or river.

Our favorite PNW beach locations include:

  • Cannon Beach, Oregon
  • Deception Pass State Park, Whidbey Island, Washington
  • Seaside, Oregon
  • Westport Beach, Washington
  • Pacific City, Oregon
  • Alki Beach, West Seattle, Washington

The mountains are where we found ourselves (or at least some peace and quiet!)

Mountaineer John Muir once said, “the mountains are calling, and I must go.”

To be honest, we couldn’t agree more. There is just something magical about a day spent in the mountains, especially if you are local to the Pacific Northwest. Whether your adventure includes a ski trip down the mountain or a hike to the top, there may be nothing more fulfilling than a day spent in the thick of nature.

So, if you’re looking for a little more adventure, head to the mountains.

There you can go hiking, camping, or even just sightseeing. And, if you time it right, you can find some great deals on lodging. Just be sure to pack your warmest clothes and carry all of your essentials in your favorite POTN bag.

Some of our favorite PNW mountains include:

  • Mount Hood
  • Mount Rainier
  • Mount St. Helens
  • Mount Shasta
  • Mount Jefferson

Family at Pike Place Marketing in Seattle

The hustle and bustle of the city provide endless entertainment and possibilities.

Can someone cue up “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys?

Okay, we’re kidding (kind of!) but doesn’t city life automatically make you think of the Big Apple?

From the hustle and bustle of city centers to the unique shops and restaurants you can find along the way, there is something so special about spending some time in a city, especially if it’s your first visit.

There are plenty of ways to enjoy your city of choice without spending a lot of money.

Our favorite ways include:

  • Visiting museums and art galleries
  • Take a walking tour
  • Exploring local neighborhoods
  • Taking in a local event, farmer’s market, or art event
  • Exploring sculpture parks and river walks
  • Visiting famous landmarks

Whether you decide on taking a trip to the Big Apple or prefer to explore Pike’s Place Market in Seattle, an adventure is to be had ahead.
